Mary Florence Chisholm
Posted on June 2, 2008 @ 01:06:32 PM by Paul Meagher

Condolences to the family of Mary Florence and Joe Chisholm on the death of their mother Mary Florence.

The following is Mary's obiturary published in the Chronicle Herald newspaper (June 2, 2008). The accompanying photo was not included in the online obiturary.

CHISHOLM, Mary Florence - We are saddened to announce the death of Mary Florence (Meagher) Chisholm, age 86, at Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home on May 30, 2008. Born in Brook Village on November 1, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Lauchie and Catherine (MacLellan) Meagher, Brook Village. Mary Florence graduated from Provincial Normal College (Nova Scotia Teachers' College) in 1941 and taught in Hays River, Glencoe Station, Brook Village and Port Hood Consolidated School. She also worked as a caregiver at Mary's Hill Home in Mabou and at the Port Hood Credit Union. Mary Florence was a member of St. Peter's Parish, Port Hood and was a sacristan for many years. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Women's League and a member of the Secular Franciscan Order. Mary Florence was a woman of strong faith and prayer. Having grown up in a home filled with music, Mary Florence naturally carried this love of music with her, to be shared with family and friends. Mary Florence and Joe's home was often the setting for fiddle and piano tunes, step dancing, singsongs, storytelling, and even the occasional piper marching through the house. Mary Florence's own piano playing was a great source of pleasure for herself and family members, as was her own enjoyment of a good story and her ability to tell one. Mary Florence's compassion was endless, especially for the ill, for the less fortunate, for children. In her own home she cared for her mother, her uncle and her husband, Joe, during their illnesses. In her tremendous humility she saw her good deeds only as her duty. Her unwavering faith and hope allowed her to laugh and find humour even in the midst of life's challenges. Mary Florence stood as a strong and generous example to her family and friends. She is survived by children, Rod (Ethel), Port Hood; Kathleen (Angus MacDonald), New Glasgow; Margie (Terry King), Long Point; Helen Ann, Halifax; Meagher (Stefani), New York; Edmund (Sandra), Port Hood; Cyril (Lynn), Port Hood; grandchildren, Cohen (Jodi), Corrine, Stephanie, Jamieson, Genevieve Chisholm; Michelle, Charmaine, Angus MacDonald, Shaun, Jason King, Sharon (King) Manson, Emiko, Lian Chisholm, Elizabeth, Adele, Nicholas Chisholm, Genna and Rhiannon Chisholm, and great-grandchild, Abigail Manson. Mary Florence is also survived by her sister, Helen MacDonald, Brook Village; brothers, Joe (Belle), New Waterford; Francis (Irene), Manitouwadge; J.D., Sudbury, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mary Florence was predeceased by her husband, Joe, in 1979, daughter, Noreen, in 1970, and brothers, Jim, Alan, Donald, John A. and Nick. Visitation will be at the Port Hood Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. today and from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Tuesday, June 3. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Peter's Church, Port Hood, on Wednesday, June 4, at 11 a.m. Donations in memory of Mary Florence may be made to St. Peter's Parish Cemetery Fund.

Site upgrade status
Posted on January 4, 2007 @ 10:47:56 PM by Paul Meagher

Around a month and a half ago the web server this site is hosted on was upgraded. Unfortunately, the software running this site needed to be upgraded as well before it would work again. Tonight I finished upgrading enough software and content to re-launch the site again. I've also added a new header graphic to the site that was created by Mary Lou Landry for the last Meagher family reunion. I hope to incorporate more parts of that graphic into this site (pictures of Lauchie and Catherine's children) as time permits. I also still need to upgrade the family tree component of this site and when that is ready I will let you know.

Hi to all my Meagher relatives.

I am just a new PC owner and this site was my first entry to "favourites" ! Thanks, Paul and Melanie for starting this and keeping it going. I am looking forward to the weddings this summer in Cape Breton! As I am so interested in geneology and history I am always on the look out for new "connections". I always find it a possibility of connection if the Meaghers in question originated in Kilkenny Ireland in the late 1700's. Most Meaghers who emigrated to Nova Scotia seem to be from Tipperary. Ours were from Kilkenny the neighbouring county. They lived near the border in a "townland" of the city of Callan. The townland area was called Killaloe (not the city of Killaloe in County Clare) . Of these Meaghers who came to Cape Breton in the eary 1800's (some via Newfoundland briefly), several moved to the U.S. probably after the 1870's. Alex Meagher moved to Montana ( Butte?) and died in Toppenish, Washington state in 1946. He had 3 children, Eleanor, John and A.C His sister Margaret ( Meagher ) Grogan lived in Belgrade Montana . Other Meaghers who were supposed to have moved to the US were the family of Nicholas Meagher (not the younger Judge Nicholas H .Meagher ) . This Nicholas was the brother of our ancestor, Daniel. He had come Brook Village and Mount Young before 1825 from Ireland and had died at Mt Young by 1871. He had a big family. His sons Edward (Ned) and John may have moved to the US but some of Edward's family were still in Cape Breton in 1891. His wife was an Adams from this area. I pass on these "tidbits"as it may fill in the blanks for someone who thinks they had roots in Cape Breton , Nova Scotia. Great to be able to keep in touch this way . See some of you soon! on the "net"

Pretty Hot Here....

Well Meagher family...I am really getting excited to go home this summer for the wedding.....soon very soon. This time I plan on spending quite a bit of time home before heading back to the city. I have noticed that our guestbook has generated quite a bit of attention in the last while, I think that is fantastic and thanks so much to Kay Ann for the recent info she posted in the guestbook. I also wanted to say to any family or friends that are passing through Mabou on August 26 please drop by the hall or church for my wedding. The wedding is at 2:00 in the Mabou church and the reception is at 9:00 at the Mabou hall. As stated in the invite there will be lots of celebrating (until the night become day). I hope that everyone's summer is going well...Hope to see you at home

Gone but not forgotten...

As I am sure most of you have heard, on April 9, 2006, John A. Meagher passed away. As a father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend he will be dearly missed. I would like to thank all who came to his funeral, gave floral donations, donated money to charities, brought food to the houses and prepared the lunch at the hall. Your generosity has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. My grandfather was a tremendous man and if we all tried to live our lives by his example...the world would benefit.

Meagher history

Loraine Huemmer asked me this question which I am forwarding to all Meaghers for any assistence you might provide.

I am searching for info re Michael Joseph Meagher of Brooklyn, N.Y. He arived in NY around 1860 from Nina, Tipperary and brought over 9 brothers and sisters including his father, John. I have a family picture of about 20 adults and 15 children and would love to get some names. His second marriage was to Katherine, widow of a salloon keeper. Michael had a saloon on third avenue in Brooklyn. I know some of his children were Walter, Matt, John, and Margaret.

You can use the contact us form if you have any info and we will forward it to Loraine or get you in contact with one another.

Hope your summer is going well!

As a few of you have heard I am getting married next year. Many people have been asking me questions... so here are a few answers. Keep August 26, 2006 free as that is when I will be getting married. I am getting married at home, most likely in Mabou and I am marrying Dylan Beaton from Mabou. Consider this a save -the-date card. Happy summer to all of you!

Happy Saint Paddys Day!
Posted on March 17, 2005 @ 01:18:18 PM by Melanie Meagher

A little more Irish Gaelic for Saint Paddy's Day!
Beannachtai na Feile Padraig Oraibh!
Meaning: St. Patrick's Day Blessing Opun You!

A little humour

As soon as she had finished parochial school, a bright young girl
named Lena shook the dust of Ireland off her shoes and made her
way to New York where before long, she became a successful
performer in show business.

Eventually she returned to her home town for a visit and on a
Saturday night went to confession in the church which she had
always attended as a child. In the confessional Father Sullivan
recognized her and began asking her about her work. She
explained that she was an acrobatic dancer, and he wanted to
know what that meant.

She said she would be happy to show him the kind of thing she did
on stage.

She stepped out of the confessional and within sight of Father
Sullivan, she went into a series of cartwheels, leaping splits,
handsprings and backflips. Kneeling near the confessional, waiting
their turn, were two middle-aged ladies. They witnessed Lena's
acrobatics with wide eyes, and one said to the other:

"Will you just look at the penance Father Sullivan is givin' out this
night, and me without me bloomers on!"

Sad News

We are very sorry to hear of Isabel (MacDonald) Meagher's passing. By now I am sure that you have all heard, our thoughts and prayers go out to her tremendous family. I had gone to Isabels wake in Halifax and it certainly was a testament to the life that she led, there were so many people present, friends and family. Isabel was a wonderful woman and I have been in contact with her grandchildren and I would like to make a page of tribute for her, hopefully we will be able to share some pieces of her life with you. I will be relocating in a week to Ottawa. I will still be able to work on this site however my previous contact information is no longer valid. I can always be reached through my email address: melanie_meagher@hotmail.com, and I will post my new contact information soon. Cheers

Sorry about the lack of new information
Posted on June 21, 2004 @ 12:00:35 PM by Melanie Meagher

I am terribly sorry about the lack in new information. I have been quite busy the last few months. However, I also have not had very much response from the extended family members. Unless, I recieve information regarding the other branches of this tree, there is not much I can do to make it representative. I am adding a prayer line, it will just be something simple meant to remind people to keep those who are sick within our prayers. If you would like someone added to this just email me at melanie_meagher@hotmail.com.

Keep checking in
Posted on January 26, 2004 @ 02:34:25 PM by Melanie Meagher

I hope that you will help Melanie out by sending us some of your family stories, recipies, jokes, news stories, photo scans, graphic art, family tree corrections, additions, etc.... I also hope to have some time to make it so that additional details about a person in the family tree are presented (Melanie has added more information about each person, including biographical stories, than is presently showing).
